Smartwatches are increasingly popular, but they can be confusing to use. Whether you’re trying to connect an Android watch to a laptop, an Apple Watch to a desktop or a Fitbit Versa to your headphones, it’s important to understand how they work.
1. Use a USB cable
If you want to connect your smartwatch to a computer, the best way is to use a USB cable that comes with the watch or one sold separately by the manufacturer. These cables are available from most major brands and are easy to use.
2. Connect your watch to Bluetooth
The most common way to connect a smartwatch is through Bluetooth. This method works with most devices, including iPhones and laptops. But it can also be vulnerable to security issues, and there’s no guarantee that you won’t encounter some problems when connecting your smartwatch with a computer.
3. Sync your phone and smartwatch together
You can use your smartwatch with your phone, or vice versa, by pairing them via Bluetooth. This process will make it possible to sync your calendar, calls and messages between your smartwatch and your phone.
4. Use apps from your smartwatch
The majority of smartwatches come with their own apps, which can help you organize your life and keep track of important information. Some even let you use voice commands to do things like check your notifications and send text messages from your wrist.
5. Flick your watch to activate the display
If you have an app installed on your smartwatch, you can tap and flick your watch to trigger the screen to come on. This is a great way to check your notifications, make notes and even play music without having to reach for your smartphone.
6. Pair your smartwatch with your headphones
If your watch is a newer Fitbit Ionic, Fitbit Versa 1 or 2 or the Fitbit Versa 3, you can link up your headphones using the Settings app. This is the easiest method because it lets your headphones search for nearby devices and select them automatically.
7. Connect your smartwatch to other devices
Some smartwatches can act as remote controls for other gadgets, such as TVs or computers. This is particularly helpful if you have a compatible smartwatch and a television, a desktop or a mobile phone that supports Bluetooth.
8. Use the Google Assistant on your smartwatch
If you’ve got an Android watch, the good news is that there’s a built-in assistant that makes your life easier. It can check your notifications, play music or give you directions.
9. Activate your smartwatch with a password
Some smartwatches don’t have a password, but some models, such as the Apple Watch and Samsung Galaxy Gear, do. This means that if you forget your password, you can still use your watch to access your accounts.
Alternatively, you can use a password lock feature to secure your smartwatch. This can be a useful feature to have on your watch, especially if you’re traveling.
